What Can I Do About Drunk Driving?
Drunk driving is a major issue both here in Maryland and around the United States.
Did you know that according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention approximately one person dies every 50 minutes due to the actions of a drunk driver? This causes thousands of fatalities every year, which is why Maryland is very tough on drunk drivers. However, there are ways that you can help prevent needless deaths due to the actions of drunk drivers.
The first is to be alert for potentially impaired drivers on the road. You can often spot a potential drunk driver because they will be controlling their vehicle erratically, and may be driving well below the speed limit. Drunk drivers often have trouble staying within the lines of the road, and if you are close to the drunk driver you may notice that they are leaning far forward since their vision is being impacted.
If you suspect that there is a drunk driver in your vicinity, the first thing to do is ensure your own safety. You do not want to be in the wrong place at the wrong time if they finally pass out or otherwise lose control of the vehicle.
Next, make sure that you make a note of any pertinent information about the car and its driver. For example, getting the license plate state and number is a major help for law enforcement. Other important things to note are the condition, size, color, and make of the vehicle in question.
The next step is to call 911 and inform law enforcement of the impaired driver. Acting quickly can help save lives.
