| The
buying and selling of goods and services via the Internet
has become a normal part of life for millions of people
around the world in a very short span of time. Less
than two decades ago, most people knew nothing about
the World Wide Web, and the word "dot-com" had not yet
entered our vocabulary.
The Internet
today offers limitless opportunities for commerce. Unfortunately,
it also offers limitless opportunities for fraud, identity
theft and other predatory behaviors.
At the Law
Office of Michael S. Rothman, located in Rockville,
Maryland, I offer experienced representation to consumers
who are the victims of Internet fraud. I also offer
legal services to people harmed by other types of cybercrime
including identity theft and e-mail spamming.

By some estimates,
Internet scams involving online auctions and the buying
and selling of general merchandise together account
for nearly three-fourths of Internet-related consumer
fraud. There are many ways to disguise illegitimate
transactions and to trick even the most sophisticated
users of the Internet, sometimes by manipulating electronic
images and documents.
What recourse
does a cybercrime victim have? Does consumer protection
exist in cyberspace?
As an
attorney experienced in Internet law and consumer
protection, I know how:
- To
help the victims of Internet fraud, enabling
them to undo fraudulent transactions
- To
recover money lost in such transactions
- To
obtain punitive damages, in some instances,
from the perpetrators of Internet fraud
I have successfully
handled a number of high-dollar consumer protection
disputes involving trading on eBay.
I have practiced
Internet law since the late 1990s and consider myself
a leader in the field. I brought one of the leading
cases in Maryland involving commercial spamming, and
wrote an article on Internet
law and commerce published by the Maryland Journal
of International Law and Commerce.
